Many believe that Terence Crawford the undisputed welterweight champion is the pound-for-pound number-one fighter, but according to Canelo Alvarez, that is not the case. In the build-up to his September 30th pay-per-view fight on Showtime, the undisputed super middleweight world champion, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will face another undisputed champion, Jermell Charlo, who is moving up two weight classes to face Canelo, as Charlo holds all four belts in the junior middleweight.
Alvarez doing media rounds for his fight at the end of the month, while speaking with TMZ Sports explained that Crawford's resume lacks the depth of recognizable opponents as well as marquee wins.
“Look, I respect Terence Crawford," said Canelo to TMZ Sports. "He’s very talented, but he just [has] one big fight. If you see his record, he just beat one good fighter. Other than that, he hasn’t beat other good fighters like Spence”
Canelo also praised Crawford's recent TKO victory over Errol Spence elevated his status in the boxing world. That said, Canelo feels that is Crawford's lone major win of his career.
"He did a really good job with Spence," furthered Canelo. "It almost [looked] very easy, but I knew Terence Crawford is a great fighter, but you never know in boxing."
Crawford's undefeated 40-0 record has made him a prominent figure in the sport, with many considering him the pound-for-pound best, especially after outclassing another pound-for-pound fighter like Errol Spence Jr. Over the past couple of weeks rumors have started to flood the internet with chatter between Alvarez and Crawford, as a super-fight in the future. For now, it appears Canelo is focused on the task at hand against Charlo, rather than speculation.
Alvarez holding a record 59-2 record has faced Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Gennadiy Golovkin, and Dmitry Bivol throughout his career, thus why he cites himself as having a better resume..
As for Crawford, he has publicly expressed interest in becoming the first boxer ever in the four-belt era to become an undisputed world champion in three weight classes, as he'd like to challenge the winner of Canelo vs. Charlo.
"[I want to] go up from 147 lbs to 168 lbs and to win... I want to be three-time undisputed,” said Terence Crawford on the Joe Rogan Experience. “A three-time undisputed champion and a smaller fighter that went up three weight divisions to conquer one of the baddest men besides myself that have been doing it probably [longer] than me."
