Canelo Alvarez has traditionally fought twice in one calendar year. Typically the first week of May and the second week of September.
Now it is being reported by Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout that Canelo might target Jaime Munguia in May and David Benavidez in September. Though Munguia has been whispered as an option for the past five to six years for Canelo Alvarez, his slow decline in top opposition until recently has moved him closer to fighting prospects than the face of boxing. In short, Munguia has fought lackluster competition and at times had unconvincing performances in recent matches.
“The remaining fights of the agreement [for Canelo] would take place in May and September of next year, contemplating a possible battle against David Benavidez for [September], as long as he wins against Demetrius Andrade this November 25,” said Salvador Rodriguez to ESPN Knockout. “Those two fights would be distributed by Showtime PPV.”
In business terms, a Canelo-Munguia matchup seems enticing due to its high-profit potential seems high. We have a Mexican legend and a young Mexican boxer with an exciting style facing each other. It is young versus old. The cons to the bout are clear as well, Munguia isn't perceived as a genuine threat to Canelo's undisputed super middleweight title and might be getting the opportunity based on a loyal fanbase rather than merit. Canelo has already completed one fight in his Showtime contract, when he outclassed Jermell Charlo last September, and it appears the plan is to complete the deal by 2024 which could be the last event broadcast by Showtime boxing ever.
Nevertheless, some boxing enthusiasts would prefer Canelo to face a risky opponent in May rather than Munguia, whose record largely comprises of hand-selected opposition. Names that are brought up by hardcore fight fans are David Morrell, Dmitry Bivol, Artur Beterbiev, and Janibek Alimkhanuly. None of which will more than likely get a second glance compared to Munguia.
Munguia who doesn't have an official fight date yet, but there are strong rumblings will return in January against John Ryder looks to be in a position to land the fight of his life.
it is also important to understand and consider that nothing is official, and that if Munguia does fight Ryder that is a very tough fight.
Nonetheless, it appears Munguia might be one of the first names to be circulated for Canelo's return in 2024.
