The first major moment of a big fight is over as both Jermell Charlo and Canelo Alvarez weighed the same weight for Saturday's pay-per-view fight for the undisputed four-belt title at the super middleweight division. Both fighters hit the scale at 167.4 pounds as first reported by Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com, as a private weigh-in took place before this afternoon's ceremonial weigh-in will take place at Toshiba Plaza.
Charlo, who holds all four titles at the junior middleweight division until the first bell of this fight rings on Saturday, as then the WBO will strip him of his title, was thought to come in a bit under the super middleweight limit by some. Charlo's heaviest prior was in 2015 coming in at a catchweight of a little over 155 pounds.
News of him coming in nearly fourteen pounds heavier than his previous championship weight can be taken many different ways. For some, it might signal he is a true super middleweight and has filled into the weight properly. For others, it might mean he could be giving up his advantage of speed and quickness focusing on size or ability.
According to Idec, the rest of the weights on the undercard are as follows - Jesus Ramos weighed in at 153.4 pounds, which was matched by his opponent and former world title challenger Erickson Lubin for their junior middleweight co-main event. Former welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas made the welterweight of 147 pounds right on the dot while Mario Barrios had .2 pounds to spar coming in at 146.8 pounds. Their fight will be for the WBC interim welterweight world title. Opening up the pay-per-view card Elijah Garcia weighed 159.6 pounds as he will face Armando Resendiz who came in at 159.6 pounds in a middleweight bout.
