The possibility of a fight between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez is certainly intriguing for boxing fans, and might have gotten one step closer when Crawford recently did an interview with The Breakfest Club on Power 105.1 FM.
The obvious issue between the two is weight classes. Crawford started his career at lightewight and now fights at welterweight. Canelo has fought the past few years at super midldeweight and light heavyweight - divisions well above welterweight. When the idea of a fight was thrown out - it was not dismissed by Crawford as some might have suspected. Crawford is three-to-four weight classes below Canelo Alvarez, but where there is a will, there often is a way in boxing...at least.
"Well, you know [we could fight at a] catchweight," said Crawford to The Breakfest Club. "We could do something at a catchweight."
Crawford is a future hall-of-famer as he is the only male fighter in the four-belt era to become undisputed in two different weight classes holding the crown at junior welterweight and welterweight. Canelo Alvarez currently is the super middleweight undisputed world champion, who is facing Jermell Charlo on September 30th of this year in a battle of undisputed versus undisputed. Charlo the undisputed world champion of the junior middleweight division is moving up two weight classes to face Canelo.
Crawford didn't rule out the idea of fighting Canelo in the future.
"Probably like 160 [middleweight]," furthered Crawford when asked at what weight would he be willing to fight Canelo Alvarez at. "158, 160, that'd be cool."
Negotiating the terms of the fight, including the weight, purse split, etc, would be far from simple, but the fact that Crawford acknowledged it can happen is a step in the right direction. This comes on the heels of his sparring partner Shakur Stevenson saying that Crawford would beat Canelo.
One thing is clear is that Crawford is on a career-high after stopping Errol Spence Jr., as he is getting the credit he should've gotten awhile ago, and now is getting to do the media rounds that are afforded to him from a major victory.
