Oscar De La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, went on the very popular MMA Hour hosted by Ariel Helwani in which he broke some news that a fighter he co-promote Jaime Munguia and WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez have been talking about making a fight happen.
De La Hoya very candidly explained that he is looking to hammer out the details and make the fight between the two top-rated super middleweights, as it has been made public that Munguia is hoping to return in November.
“I’m working [on a fight] right now between Jaime Munguia and Benavideez," said Oscar De La Hoya to Ariel Helwani on his YouTube show on MMAFighting. "I’m talking to his representativeness of Benavidez, but there are whispers that Edgar Berlanga wants to fight Jaime Munguia."
Berlanga, who reecntly fought Jason Quigley is a high-profile fighter, who is undefeated who recently signed with Matchroom Boxing. Munguia being co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, shares the same distubution network, DAZN, which could make that fight very fesiable. This has also seen the CEO of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, and Oscar De La Hoya having a Twitter battle at times, somewhat over this bout...or not.
“Yeah, if the opportunity presents itself, and we can sit down and talk [about making a fight with David Benavidez]," furthered De La Hoya. "Look, business is business. I have no problem sitting down and talking to somebody that wants to do business and wants to create champions and build superstars."
Munguia last fought in June gettting a thrilling victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko in the super middleweight division. Earlier this year, Benavidez's father, and coach, Jose Benavidez Sr., listed Munguia as a top choice for an opponent if they could get the Canelo fight.
“To be honest, a fight that would make a lot of sense right now is someone that isn’t in our company, and that’s Jaime Munguia," told Benavidez Sr., to ProBoxTV News. "I think that is a fight that people would want to see. He already has some fans in Mexico, and since Canelo didn’t want to fight David, then let's get Munguia.”
