Oscar De La Hoya envisions Canelo Alvarez-Jaime Munguia soon

A fight between Jaime Munguia and Saul Alvarez could be within reach, even though the Golden Boy Promotions boxer already has a fight booked January 27 against former Canelo opponent John Ryder at the FootPrint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Imagine Jaime beating Ryder, and then a potential Canelo fight,” De La Hoya told reporters this week.

“An all-Mexican duel," he said. "It would be a huge honor as a promoter, it would be a huge honor to be involved in an all-Mexican duel with Canelo and Jaime Munguia. We haven’t seen that type of fight at that level since Erik Morales versus [Marco Antonio] Barrera… these types of fights are very special."

ProBox TV has recently reported, via our sources out of Mexico, that Canelo had been discussing a possible bout with Munguia for next year.

De La Hoya said: "Jaime is very close, and obviously it is all up to Canelo Alvarez. Like he says, he is the king and he chooses whoever he wants to fight, but Jaime Munguia is just chipping away, and doing what he does best.

"To get noticed, to get that recognition, to be at the top. So maybe one day Canelo can choose him to fight.”

Munguia, age 27, is the former WBO junior middleweight world champion. Munguia won the title from Sadam Ali. Yet, despite that historic night, five years ago. Munguia career has been moved carefully and slowly. It appears if he is able to get by Ryder, the goal is a big fight. In his division, no fight or fighter is bigger than Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

He event said "he believes so" when asked if the Canelo bout could be next for him after Ryder.

“And if that happens [beating John Ryder] we will keep fighting to look for the big fights. That’s what I am going to keep on doing, keep fighting for that opportunity to get the big fights

“John Ryder is a very tough fighter, a world-class experienced fighter, but I believe with Freddie [Roach] in my corner we are going to be okay this fight.”
