Golden Boy Prez gives update on Munguia-Berlanga developments

It appears Jaime Munguia, and his co-promoter, Golden Boy Promotions are actively pursuing a fight with Edgar Berlanga for an upcoming October fight date. Earlier this week, it was reported by ProBox TV News that talks between David Benavidez and Jaime Munguia seem to have gone nowhere, and thus Benavidez's next fight appears to be a November pay-per-view clash against two-division, world champion Demetrius Andrade.

It appears Munguia was in the midst of talks for another big fight with Edgar Berlanga, which was part of the puzzle that was missing.

ProBox TV News recently caught up with Eric Gomez, the President of Golden Boy Promotions, to talk about the future of Jaime Munguia who is co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, and Zanfer Promotions.

Munguia, who last fought Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a fight-of-the-year contender in June, now has a tentative date for his return to the ring as well as it appears he will be fighting twice this year.

"We are looking at late October or potentially early November," said Gomez about a timeframe for when Munguia would return.

A rumored bout between Munguia and Berlanga has been speculated since Berlanga signed with Matchroom which shares a broadcast partner of DAZN, a streaming app, with Golden Boy Promotions. Even though a Twitter feud between Golden Boy Promotions' Oscar De La Hoya, and Matchroom's Eddie Hearn had occurred two months ago, serious talks began rather sooner than you think.

"We've been talking [to Berlanga's side] for about two weeks," furthered Gomez.

One of the things that makes the bout difficult to make could be the simple political nature of the sport. Berlanga left his long-time promoter, Top Rank Inc., to sign with Matchroom Boxing. It appears that Berlanga signed with Matchroom Boxing in hopes of landing a Canelo Alvarez fight, but now Canelo is alleged to have a three-fight deal in place with Premier Boxing Champions. So, for Berlanga, that appears to be a major letdown, and though Munguia is a big name - it is a hard fight, especially when he might have believed he was close to landing a Canelo bout, that would net a career-high payday. So it appears that some of the moving parts come down to simple boxing math - risk versus reward.

"Berlanga was hoping to fight Canelo," explained Gomez. "So for him, it is a little bit of a different situation. It's kind of like a consolidation fight for him. With us, with Munguia, no issues whatsoever. [We will] do the fight."

That said, Gomez was very clear in letting ProBox TV News that they are trying to make the fight and that currently, that is the fight they are looking at for Munguia at the present moment.

Also, if this card were to happen it appears that Floyd Schofield, better known by his nickname, 'Kid Austin', would be featured on this card.

"[Schofield] will fight again [this year], we are targeting October, he might even fight under Munguia if we are able to get that Munguia fight done," said Gomez. "Great kid, you know he suffered a bad cut in his last fight, but that's another kid we want to keep busy. We've kept him pretty busy this year, and he's another kid we are very excited about."
