Devin Haney doesn't agree with Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, regarding when a bout with boxing star, Gervonta Davis, should happen.
According to Haney, a bout between him and Davis has a huge financial interest as well is for the potential number-one spot in the lightweight division. Haney was critical of the approach that is being used by Davis and his team of prolonging fights.
"I’m willing to do what it takes to make the biggest fights happen," said Haney to FightHype. "I’ve proven that. I’ve signed with other networks and promoters to make the fights happen."
The marination strategy, which Mayweather Promotions has employed, especially in the career of Floyd Mayweather and his career. Haney acknowledges that it worked well for Floyd Mayweather but the slow burn has stifled opportunities for Davis to showcase his abilities against top-tier competition, and prove that he is one of the best fighters of his era.
Haney would even wonder out loud whether Davis could have enhanced his career and fan engagement by facing formidable opponents instead of opting for what Haney deems safer, beatable foes.
“We got to see what position I’m in if they were to offer a fight [to me]," said Haney. "At times, I could [have done that approach]...but I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make the biggest fights happen."
Haney underscores his proactive approach which is best seen in action as he is moving up to the junior welterweight division to fight, Regis Prograis for Prograis' WBC junior welterweight world title in a bout taking place in San Francisco, California. The first major fight in a major U.S. city in quite some time. Haney has also been compared to Davis throughout his career as early in Haney's career he was publicly around Floyd Mayweather a lot, but seemingly Davis took that spot publicly when Davis signed with Mayweather Promotions. The two will always be compared as they came from the same era emerging as word-of-mouth guys given the blessing of the next great fighter by Floyd Mayweather in a world that was looking for the next Mayweather
Devin Haney seems to believe a fight with Gervonta Davis represents the best versus the best, and is making it clear that he is challenging the marination model upheld by Mayweather Promotions. If these two were to fight, then that would leave one man left in the conversation of the best modern lightweight, as 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist, Shakur Stevenson, should face the winner of this alleged bout in a perfect world which would define the all-time great, for now, of the era.
