Devin Haney's era of being a lightweight world champion is over as he has outgrown the lightweight division and won't go back, the 25-year-old said Wednesday.
Haney, who held all four lightweight titles after defeating George Kambosos Jr., made two defenses of the undisputed championship, and is now moving to the junior welterweight division to face WBC champ Regis Prograis on December 9.
"I did everything at [lightweight] I could," Haney said to ESPN.
"The biggest fight [to make was against] Gervonta Davis, and his side showed no interest in making that fight."
Haney said he's "outgrown the division" and added that he's looking "to become a three-division champion and move up to [welterweight], God willing that I'm successful after this fight."
Haney had a long road to the undisputed title at 135-pounds, as he won the WBC interim title in 2019 when he stopped Zaur Abdullaev.
Labeled an "email champion" when the WBC upgraded him to full champion, Haney earned his plaudits when he went to Australia to defeat George Kambosos Jr. for all the belts in 2022.
He has since beaten Kambosos in a rematch, and Vasiliy Lomachenko by decision.
Shakur Stevenson recently won the WBC vacant lightweight title when he out-pointed Edwin de los Santos earlier this month.
Vasyl Lomachenko's bout with George Kambosos in 2024 could crown an IBF lightweight champion.
Gervonta Davis, meanwhile, is a secondary champion in the WBA rankings and could feasibly get promoted to the organization's full champion.
