After Tyson Fury knocked out British boxing legend Derek Chisora in December 2022, Fury took a brief hiatus from boxing which ended in a retirement declaration, the second of his career.
Now Fury will be facing a MMA veteran and former heavyweight champion in Francis Ngannou. At best, this fight is more entertainment, and at worst it prays on the vulnerablities of MMA fans, who have at times irrational belief in some of their superstars, as Ngannou might be the next one to receive blind-faith from the MMA community.
Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, recently weighed on the fight when speaking to Boxing News.
"I think that is going to be a really good, competetive fight," said Bob Arum to Boxing News. "The MMA guy can really punch, and it will do tremendous pay-per-view numbers, both in the U.K., and in the United States."
The bout which has yet to have an official press conference will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and will be a pay-per-view event.
This will also serve as Ngannou's first sanctioned boxing match which will be occuring as one of the last fights of his career. Fury at this point is a semi-retired fighter, who holds the WBC heavyweight title, the last bit needed for Oleksandr Usyk's quest for undisputed at the heavyweight division. Though cynics and traditionalist are not as onboard with this fight, Arum is thrilled to be involved with the making of this fight.
"So, I'm really pleased to be involved in that fight," said Arum.
The latest bit of news about the October 28th fight is that Mike Tyson will assist Francis Ngannou in his training for Fury.
