Former Mexican world champion and undefeated super middleweight Jaime Munguía has embarked on a new chapter in his training journey, teaming up with renowned trainer Freddie Roach of Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California. The news first reported by Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Knockout, stated that Munguía is on the brink of confirming Roach as his new coach in the coming days, after leaving four-time world champion Érik 'Terrible' Morales, who had been guiding for the past few years.
Per Rodriguez's reporting Zanfer Promotions is finalizing plans for Jaime Munguía's return to the ring in the fall of this year. This also aligns with ProBox TV News' reporting when we spoke to Eric Gomez, the President of Golden Boy Promotions, and co-promoter of Munguia, who gave us a tentative target of late October, early-November for Munguia's return. Though Gomez had confirmed that talks for a bout between Munguia and Édgar Berlanga were ongoing. it now appears Munguia's next opponent might be John Ryder, who last fought Canelo Alvarez.
Munguía, a 26-year-old with an impressive record of 42-0 and 33 knockouts, recently found himself in a fight-of-the-year contender against Sergiy Derevyanchenko as won the fight by a narrow margin with the scores of 115-112, 114-113, and 114-113.
The decision for Munguia and Morales to part was revealed by ESPN Knockout as time conflicts for Morales, who has taken on the role of being the director of the Baja California Sports Institute, which has limited his ability to commit his full attention to Munguia.
Freddie Roach is an iconic trainer, who has trained some of the best fighters of the modern era including Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, James Toney, Michael Moore, and Mike Tyson. Roach also faced Munguia in a recent bout, when Gabriel Rosado fought Jaime Munguia.
