PHOENIX: World champion boxer Oscar Collazo and his promoter Oscar de la Hoya appear to have entered into an agreement that could involve "a briefcase full of money."
The WBO minimumweight titlist Collazo boxes in the co-main event of Saturday's show involving Jaime Munguia and John Ryder, which takes place at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, live on DAZN.
Collazo fights Reyneris Gutierrez at the weekend's Golden Boy Promotions event and, while it's the second defense of his 105-pound belt, it's his first of the year — and he wants it to be the first of five in 2024.
Considering the way in which de la Hoya introduced him to ProBox TV and other media at Thursday's final pre-fight press conference, it's something the Golden Boy boss perhaps believes possible, too.
"Since he began boxing, Oscar Collazo has been on the fast-track towards leaving an incredible mark on the sport for Puerto Rico," de la Hoya said.
Collazo, meanwhile, said he's ready to go after a 12-week training camp. "I think we're going to put on a show Saturday."
He then paused as he was about to say something that had seemingly been on his mind for months.
"I want to say something," said Collazo.
"This is my second defense, but my first [defense] this year," Collazo then addressed de la Hoya. "I saw a tweet a couple months ago where Oscar said these champions [of today] are not the like the 90s champions that they get five defenses in a year.
Speaking to his promoter, he said: "You said you'd give a couple of dollars to any champion who defends it in five fights in a year. I think with your help, and Miguel Cotto help, I know I can get it."
De la Hoya then reached into his pocked as if to pull out a wedge of Benjamins, much to the delight of those around him.
But Collazo was serious. "I know I can get those defenses for you and for me and for Miguel Cotto Promotions … so I hope you keep that in mind."
Finishing, de la Hoya said: "If and when you have five world title defenses this year, I will personally give you a briefcase full of money."
