Premier Boxing Champions has a plan for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s three-fight deal with the company, a ProBox TV source with knowledge of the situation told us.
The source stressed, though, that any strategy is “tentative” and depends entirely on how certain fights play out.
Alvarez signed with PBC in June 2023 after a run on Matchroom shows, competing against Dmitry Bivol, Gennadiy Golovkin, and John Ryder.
Though Alvarez sought a rematch with Bivol, after losing on points to the unbeaten Russian in 2022, he committed to PBC and said this week that “the best promoters are Canelo Promotions and PBC.”
His first fight on that deal takes place September 30 at the T-Mobile Arena. Jermell Charlo, the No.1 fighter at super welterweight, is the opponent.
The bout is a rare instance of an undisputed champion against an undisputed champion, with Alvarez putting all of his super middleweight world titles on the line.
Canelo’s trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso recently told Little Giant Boxing that, after the fight with Jermell, Alvarez would target Charlo’s twin brother Jermall.
ProBox TV confirmed this with our source, though Canelo himself seemed to downplay the suggestion at a press conference Tuesday, saying that he doesn’t intend to face the WBC middleweight champion.
The third opponent on the three-fight deal, as it stands right now, would be David Benavidez, our source said.
Such a bout would not likely take place until a Mexican holiday in 2024, like Cinco de Mayo or Mexican Independence Day.
It would be one of the year’s biggest events, pitting the unbeaten Benavidez against Mexico’s No.1 boxer today.
Las Vegas would be the target city for the second and third fights on the deal, our source said.
