A decade ago, Jesus Ramos Jr., was a young boxing fan, who was yet a teenager. This is when he was first introduced to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, when he fought Jose Miguel Cotto, the brother of Miguel Cotto, on the Floyd Mayweather versus Shane Mosley in the co-feature of the pay-per-view.
Now Ramos Jr. is fighting as the co-feature of Canelo’s forthcoming pay-per-view against Jermell Charlo in an undisputed super middleweight bout.
Though not the same exact circumstance, the undefeated Ramos Jr., who fights at junior middleweight will face his toughest fight to date against the formidable Erickson Lubin, who has fought for a world title in the past. This will also serve for many as Ramos Jr. introduction to many fight fans as well as at the highest level of the sport.
When speaking to ProBox TV News, Ramos reflected the following
“Yeah, that is the crazy part, I grew up watching Canelo,” told Ramos Jr. to ProBox TV News. “I remember watching him when he fought Miguel Cotto’s brother, and they were talking about how he was going to be the next Mexican superstar. People were high on him, and I have seen him progress, and now me being on his undercard, as the co-main event it is crazy, it has been a journey. This is what it is all about, this is what hard work gets you.”
For Ramos Jr., despite being featured on high-profile cards and beating great opponents like Vladimir Hernandez, Brian Mendoza, Joey Spencer, amongst others, Ramos Jr., has flown under the radar. Ramos Jr. is hoping this will be the moment that fans realize he is one of the best fighters in the junior middleweight division.
“This is going to be a huge moment,” said Ramos Jr. “I just go to sleep visualizing everything. Fight week, fight night, it is going to be a great event with great exposure, which is why I want to dominate.”
Whether people still want to admit it or not, Canelo Alvarez’s fights are tentpole events in the sport of boxing. With a rather uneventful September in terms of boxing outside of the programming on ProBoxTV.com. A fight-starved starved fan-base will be eager to see fights, and Ramos Jr. vs. Erickson Lubin will be the appetizer before Canelo and Charlo hit the ring.
“For me, [fighting on Canelo’s undercard] is huge,” said Ramos Jr. “I remember doing interviews for when I was fighting in the bubble and I was excited about those fights. I just love fighting. I love competing, and doing it at this stage just makes it even better.”
