Bob Santos no longer trains Carlos Adames and Albert Puello

Carlos Adames and Alberto Puello are no longer training with Bob Santos, although both fighters achieved major accomplishments under Santos.

“Their management wanted to go in a different direction, and I said I was fine with that, you get one career, you guys do what you think is best for your career,” Santos told ProBox TV.

Adames had two fights with Santos and both were knockout wins. The first was a third-round knockout over Juan Macias Montiel, a fighter who took Jermall Charlo all 12 rounds in 2021. He also stopped Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams in the ninth round of their bout.

Adames’s fight against Montiel was for the WBC middleweight interim title, one that Adames still holds despite Jermall Charlo, the WBC middleweight champion, not fighting in the division for nearly three years.

“[It happened] maybe two [or] three months after the J-Rock fight,” Santos told ProBox TV of the split. “His manager said he wanted to go in a different direction, and I said that is fine.”

Albert Puello won his first and only world title with Santos when he won a split-decision over Botirzhon Akhmedov. It was his only fight with Santos as the lead voice in his corner. Puello was set to defend his WBA junior-welterweight title against Rolando Romero but an irregular drug test removed him from that fight.

That replacement fight saw Rolando Romero stop Israel Barroso in controversial fashion when referee Tony Weeks abruptly stepped in to stop the fight while Barroso was punching back.

“Just keep in mind with me, [Adames] is undefeated by knockout, and won one of the biggest fights of his life [to win] a world title,” said Santos. “That’s what you feel is best? That’s your investment, choose to do what you want to do.”
