Shakur Stevenson still hopes that a Devin Haney can be made in the future.
Even though the fight was offered for the undisputed lightweight title, a bout Stevenson rejected due to a financial disagreement. Stevenson recently commented on the situation on the Bootleg Kev podcast.
Stevenson is promoting his upcoming November 16th fight for the vacant WBC lightweight world title as he faces Edwin De Los Santos, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the week of the F1 race.
“I would love the fight to happen,” said Stevenson to Bootleg Kev. “Y’all could clearly see that I want the fight.”
“I don’t know why people try to spin the narrative, and 30 other people will run with that narrative. I love the fight. I’d fight anybody.”
“He knows deep down inside that I’m the truth,” stated Stevenson in regards to Haney. “He’s been in the ring with me several times. Go ask him and tell him to be honest about me as a fighter. You’ll really hear how he talks, and honestly, I think he’s a good fighter, but I think there are levels.”
Stevenson, who will be looking to become a three-division world champion in twenty-one fights, no small feat, has struggled to find star opponents thus far and is facing criticism for not taking short money to face Haney for the undisputed lightweight world title. Stevenson insists that there is more to the story, as both sides are quick to say it is the other fighter who is delaying the fight.
Stevenson will be fighting mere weeks before Devin Haney’s first fight at junior welterweight against the WBC junior welterweight champion, Regis Prograis, which will occur at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. Even if both fighters win their upcoming bouts, Stevenson didn’t seem confident the bout would be made anytime soon.
“I think [his team doesn’t] want the fight to happen right now,” said Stevenson. “That’s what I heard.”
