Super middleweight David Morrell is a high-risk, low-reward type of fighter, even before his second-round stoppage of Sena Agbeko on Saturday.
Morrell, who holds a secondary form of the WBA super middleweight title, has had a hard time finding quality opponents, despite a high ranking in the sanctioning bodies.
The belief seems to be he could be the ‘real deal’. So, most managers are opting for more lucrative options as he is the riskiest fighter in the division.
The 25-year-old, stands at six-feet, one inch, and is a big puncher, along with a southpaw.
Here are five possible opponents for Morrell in the future, should he secure the fights that his abilities may well deserve.
David Benavidez
The most obvious is David Benavidez.
Benavidez had a career year defeating Caleb Plant and stopping Demetrius Andrade. Benavidez is a bit taller than Morrell, one of the hardest hitters in the sport.
It seems as though these two are on a collision course with each other.
The question is — when will it happen? Benavidez rightfully should get a Canelo Alvarez fight. Yet, it is up to Canelo to give Benavidez the opportunity. If Canelo-Benavidez doesn’t happen in May, Benavidez-Morrell would be a suitable replacement.
Caleb Plant
One of the best super middleweights and a former IBF champion, Plant may have lost to Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez, but those are possibly the two best in the division. Plant is a tricky boxer, who is also mentally strong.
Plant is also good for a press conference soundbite. The bout could force Morrell to have to talk more. This would be a very interesting fight as Morrell has yet to fight someone like Plant.
Albeit, this is a good fight, one might think Plant would be looking to land a grudge match with Jermall Charlo before fighting Morrell.
Vladimir Shishkin
An undefeated fighter, who was once in the Canelo Alvarez sweepstakes. Shishkin has yet to make his mark on the sport with a definitive win.
He holds a unanimous win over Sena Agbeko. He also outpointed former champion, Jose Uzcategui. Shishkin, who is now 32-years-old should jump at a chance to fight at top fighter like Morrell at this point in his career.
Christian Mbilli
An undefeated pressure fighter with an Olympic pedigree. The 28-year-old fighter originally from Cameroon, who fought in the 2016 Olympics for Franc, has spent the majority of his career fighting in Canada.
Mbilli has a bout slated for January 13th, but after that, a fight with Morrell would be a good step-up for both fighters.
Erik Bazinyan
The 28-year-old undefeated Canadian has some impressive wins. He stopped Ronald Ellis in his last fight. He beat Marcelo Coceres as well as Alantez Fox.
Bazinyan returns at the end of January. If he wins will be 32-0. He is also ranked number two by the WBA. This could be a suitable fight for Morrell though Morrell would be a heavy favorite.
