Arum makes Canelo-Charlo prediction

Bob Arum has nailed his colours to the mast regarding how he views the upcoming battle of the undisputed champions will play out between Canelo Alvarez (59-2-2) and Jermell Charlo on September 30th.

Charlo (35-1-1) will move up two-weight classes to face Canelo to challenge for the undisputed super-middleweight title, which is set to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ultimately the announcement came as a surprise as many within the industry believed that Canelo would actually face the current WBC world middleweight Jermall Charlo. However, due to injuries and personal issues, Jermell agreed to step-up and secure himself a battle of the undisputed.

Furthermore, Canelo also announced last month that he had signed a three-fight deal with promotional entity Premier Boxing Champions.

Arum does not rate the chances of Charlo as he steps up in weight for the first time past the 154lb weight limit in a championship fight when he faces Canelo on September 30th. Arum was dismissive of any realistic chance that Jermell could realistically pull of the upset when asked at the premiere of Oscar De La Hoya’s HBO documentary, which has been shown in screening on the west and east coast of America.

Well, Canelo will beat him easy,” Arum told Little Giant Boxing in Los Angeles during a screening of the new HBO documentary about the life of Oscar De La Hoya. “Charlo is not…little Charlo? No. Canelo will probably knock him out in six or seven rounds.”

Charlo has been inactive since May of last year when he knocked out Brian Castano to become the undisputed super-welterweight world champion. Injuries have prevented Charlo from defending his titles, much to the frustration of mandatory challenger Tim Tszyu, who has seen a fight with Charlo postponed due to Jermell sustaining a broken hand earlier this year.
