Showtime put out a sneaky good card on Saturday night that featured two fighters from the Team Benavidez camp: middleweight Jose Benavidez Jr. (28-2-1, 19 KOs) & super middleweight Daniel Blancas (7-0, 4 KOs). Leading them into their respective fights was Jose Benavidez Sr., who was happy with what he saw after both fighters came away with a victory.
Blancas was the first to fight for Team Benavidez, scoring an impressive unanimous decision victory over Devaun Lee (11-9-1, 1 KO). Interim WBC super-middleweight champion David Benavidez was in attendance, shouting instructions from his ringside seat as Blancas was fighting. Benavidez was impressed with what he saw on Saturday night and told ProBoxTV, “He looked really good. I feel like he still has to work on a couple of things. I’m happy for the way he did and to keep working with him.”
Benavidez Sr., working the corner of Blancas, went more in-depth on what he saw and the future for Blancas. “This is my third fight with him, so we are working little by little. When he came to work with us, he still had that amateur style with him: jab and move around. What we are trying to do is get him to sit down on his punches a little, go to the body, and set things up. We are going to focus more on the body, jab, and sitting down on his punches.”
Regarding Blancas’ future, Benavidez Sr. told ProBoxTV, “More than likely, he will be fighting on David’s (Benavidez) card in November, if not the following month, but we will keep him busy.”
Benavidez Sr. then went into his son Jose’s performance, as it was his first attempt at a fight in a new division. “We’re just trying to come back. After he got shot, he fought Terence Crawford, and then he didn’t stay that busy. Now, he is more mature and has two daughters, and I think he finally understands that he has to work hard and stay disciplined. We are going to get ready for another fight, and I think he will get a bigger fight next time.”
