When Edgar Berlanga joined Matchroom this year he may have expected a lucrative fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to materialize in the coming years.
Canelo, though, left Matchroom’s roster shortly after to sign a three-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions, and fulfills the first obligation on that contract September 29 when he faces off against the undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas.
It is unclear who Canelo could face after fighting Charlo, though PBC has an embarrassment of riches in and around the super middleweight division as it could match the Mexican great against Charlo’s brother Jermall, the winner of the prospected match between David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade, or the possible dark knight of the division - David Morrell.
Berlange, though, still feels like he could enter the fray.
In an interview with DAZN, per Boxing Scene, Berlanga said he, too, is contractually obligated to fight three times on Matchroom shows.
“And one of those is Canelo,” he added.
The strategy was to either complete one fight, or two, to build enough momentum to take on Canelo in that second or third fight of the deal.
“We can still make that fight happen” despite Canelo aligning himself with PBC boss Al Haymon and Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza, said Berlanga.
“Eddie [Hearn] just [has] got to sit down, go over to PBC, Al Haymon, and we get a fight with Showtime pay-per-view.
Berlanga has already fought on one Matchroom show as he scored a unanimous decision win over Jason Quigley on June 24 at the Madison Square Garden theater in New York City to advance his pro boxing record to 21 wins (16 knockouts). He remains unbeaten.
It is unclear who Berlanga will fight next, though Matchroom boss Hearn could match him against John Ryder, Gennadiy Golovkin, or DAZN fighters like Jaime Munguia at Golden Boy Promotions.
