Trainer and manager Bill Haney has weighed in on the latest speculation regarding his son Devin and Ryan Garcia and the possibility of rekindling negotiations for a fight.
Garcia had instructed promoter Oscar De La Hoya open talks following Haney’s successful title tilt against Regis Prograis in December, when he won the WBC super-lightweight world crown in San Francisco.
Garcia then changed his ambitions, after meeting Floyd Mayweather over the festive period, and Garcia told De La Hoya to target Rolando Romero, who holds the WBA 140lbs strap. Ultimately, that fight could not be agreed and the WBA champion fights Isaac Cruz in the first defence of his title on March 30 in Vegas.
Now Garcia is seeking a new challenge.
Bill Haney was asked by FightHypeTV whether he was interested in reopening talks with Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions and he confirmed he was, but only if they were serious about signing up for the fight.
“I don’t know whether to call him Crying Ryan, Lying Ryan, or ‘is he on top of his game now’ Ryan’,” Bill Haney said. “You say you’re going to make me throw in the towel or me do this or me do that. Now, if you are serious and will sign to the fight, we’ll talk about it. We are going to talk about it.”
Bill added that he felt boxing was going through a conspiracy theory period, discussing both the apparent retirement of Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Maywether, who seemingly has Garcia’s ear.
“As far as the retiring and the conspiring going on in boxing,” Haney continued, “We got a recent retirement or is it a publicity stunt with the Stevenson team? Now I hear there might’ve been some conspiring going on with the infamous, mysterious run in the middle of the night with Ryan Garcia and ‘TBE’ Floyd Mayweather.
Bill implied that Garcia’s decision to pass on Haney was Mayweather’s and not Ryan’s.
“So Ryan comes out and says Floyd told him not to do it [fight Devin Haney], and every time not to do the fight between Devin and Ryan, right. So, am I lying? It’s the Devin Haney era. Everybody and their momma is trying to stop this shit. Did I lie about something? I say they say everything but ‘let’s fight’.”
“I don’t know what he [Mayweather] was doing running with him [Garcia] in the first place. You’re running with [Garcia], and then the man [Garcia[ comes out and says mysteriously that the [Haney] fight ain’t happening?”
