Brian McIntyre is optimistic that the announcement of a rematch between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence will come “soon”.
Crawford established himself as the undisputed welterweight champion and the world’s finest fighter the night in July he convincingly outboxed and stopped Spence across the course of nine one-sided rounds.
He has since been stripped of the IBF title and seen the talented Jarron “Boots” Ennis elevated to the status of their champion – and at a time when it was being suggested that he had fought as a welterweight for the final time.
The 33-year-old Spence has made little secret of his desire for their rematch to take place at light middleweight. Until Jermell Charlo lost so convincingly to Saul Alvarez, Crawford had been targeting a fight with Charlo, once the undisputed champion at 154lbs.
McIntyre, Crawford’s trainer, revealed that they are still to decide the weight at which their rematch will be staged at. He regardless believes his leading fighter, 36, will fight at welterweight again.
“Hopefully the announcement will come soon,” he told ProBox TV. “We got our fingers crossed.
“Things are still working. They’re still working on paperwork.
“‘Bud’ is just enjoying himself right now and just letting his team do their job.
“If I was Spence’s trainer [Derrick James] I’d probably say, ‘I’ll pass that up’, ‘cause of how one-sided it was.
“I’m not sure [about the weight] yet. We’re still waiting for things to get worked out.”
After he said that he expects Crawford to fight “a couple more” times at 147lbs, “Bomac” criticised the “crazy” IBF’s decision to strip Crawford of their title little over three months after he won it from a fighter who had held it for six years.
“Politics – it doesn’t make any sense,” he said. "It don’t make no sense. It don’t make no sense to do Terence like that.
“It just makes me shy away from that sanctioning body. I think different of them. Why would they do my guy like that? The champion makes the title, and Terence is one of those top of the line [fighters]; carries himself very well outside the ring; he’s a family man; he’s a business man; he represents boxing to the fullest.
"Why would you strip that man of that so fast and then have other access on other fighters? It doesn’t make any sense.
“It’s crazy, man. We worked hard for that title. We waited a long time for that title. You gonna strip us of that title because, what? We didn’t do nothing wrong. We didn’t get busted for no drugs. We were not causing problems or nothing like that. We went about getting that title the right way, and we should be rewarded the right way – not no half-arsed shit. That’s crazy.
“It’s frustrating. I haven’t really talked to him about it but I’m sure he’s probably a little upset.
“It’s not a good look for boxing. For them to do that shit, that’s just crazy.
“[It was a] spectacular performance [from Crawford against Spence]. One of the performances of a lifetime.
“I think [Ennis] made a statement saying that he would rather get [the title] by fighting somebody. By him saying that just shows the type of fighter and type of character that he has about himself, so I commend him on that, but I feel him too on saying, ‘I wanted to get that title by beating somebody’. People gonna talk about him because the way he got that title but it’s not his fault.
“He’s a great fighter. He’s a great fighter. He’s gonna be great. He’s got a great team around him. He’ll be alright.”
