Undisputed super-middleweight titleholder Canelo Alvarez admitted that he is heading towards the final stages of his career, speaking ahead of his undisputed title defence against current 154lb undisputed champion, Jermell Charlo.
The pair will face each other on September 30th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in an event which is already titled “Undisputed vs Undisputed” and will signify the first fight of Canelo’s three-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions following his amicable separation from Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
Canelo made his professional debut back in 2005 as a 15-year-old at super-lightweight and captured his maiden world title six years later at super-welterweight.
Since then, Canelo has had world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight and light-heavyweight before dropping back to super-middleweight and ultimately becoming the undisputed world super-middleweight world champion in 2021 with the defeat of Caleb Plant.
Speaking to the Breakfast Club, Canelo feels that he has four to five years remaining in the sport and is aiming to be retired by the age of 37-38 years old so he can enjoy time with his family and reflect on his accomplishments.
“I think I at least have four more years in me, maybe five. I’ve been a professional boxer since I was 15 years of age. That is almost 18 years of fighting professionally. I always said I would retire when I was 36 or 37, around that age. That should be more than enough; it’s so many years of boxing. By then, I will have accomplished many things, and then I will have to enjoy life with the family and all,” Canelo told The Breakfast Club.
Canelo was last in action in May in Mexico against John Ryder in defence of his undisputed title, of which Ryder was mandatory to challenge for the opportunity courtesy of being a mandatory challenger through the WBO rating system.
Canelo is likely to return following his contest with Charlo in May and September of 2024, keeping in line with fighting around the Mexican holiday period to which he has been accustomed.
