LAS VEGAS: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez appeared to dismiss a possible super-fight against Terence Crawford when speaking to ProBox TV and other reporters Wednesday.
Canelo is in the final stages of preparation for a super-fight of his own — an undisputed vs. undisputed bout against Jermell Charlo taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 30.
But just days before the show, while backstage at the MGM Grand, a reporter asked Canelo about a fight against Crawford, and the Mexican star's response suggested that he wasn't particularly interested in the welterweight boxer right now.
"No," Canelo said, in response to whether Crawford is the next opponent. "I don't think so."
Crawford is one of the hottest names in boxing after he obliterated his long-time rival Errol Spence Jr. in a box office bout in Las Vegas on July 29.
The Omaha fighter has been linked with numerous opponents including a Spence rematch, Jermell, and Canelo. However, Alvarez said Crawford is not currently his focus. "I'm focused [on Charlo]," he said. "We're gonna see what is next."
The Charlo fight, which brings together the four-belt world champion at 154-pounds and the four-belt champ at 168, is the first on a three-fight deal Canelo signed with Premier Boxing Champions.
A source with knowledge of the situation told ProBox TV in recent months that, though any strategy for Canelo is "tentative," the second and third opponents could be Jermell's brother Jermall, who is a world champ at 160, and David Benavidez, who is a ferocious and tenacious fighter at 168.
Showtime Sports will air Saturday's Canelo-Charlo event on pay-per-view.
