Well, the ever-evolving equation that is; 'who will Canelo Alvarez fight in September?' has a new storyline.
The manager of Dmitry Bivol, Vadim Kornilov, the fighter who outboxed Canelo Alvarez in May of 2022 and is the last man to beat Canelo Alvarez, now appears to be moving on from targeting a fight with Canelo. Previously, tension had arisen between the teams as Canelo Alvarez wants to face Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight looking to win Bivol's WBA light heavyweight world title, whereas Bivol's team wants to move down in weight and fight Canelo for his undisputed four-belt super middleweight world championship. Neither party seems willing to budge from their stance.
Bivol's team is rather frustrated as it seems they feel most of the dialogue is created in an effort to allow for Canelo Alvarez to get the most beneficial situation for him, and not the sport of boxing.
"In my opinion, I think they don’t want a rematch and they are saying that to justify themselves and make another fight like they did with [Gennady] Golovkin, John Ryder, and maybe [Edgar] Berlanga," furthered Kornilov. "A rematch cannot take place on the same terms as the fight you lost.”
As for who Bivol's team is now targeting. The man at light heavyweight who has all the other world titles, the three-belt light heavyweight world champion, who holds the IBF, WBO, and WBC light heavyweight titles, Artur Beterbiev.
"It's stupid," said Kornilov. "We are looking forward. Artur Beterbiev is our target.”
