On this day July 18th, 1990, Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez was born. Canelo is widely considered one of the best modern Mexican fighters with some believing he is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time. Canelo has also been the face of boxing since Floyd Mayweather retired from the sport.
Throughout his career, Álvarez has achieved remarkable success as he is a four-division world champion holding belts in junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight. This also includes unified titles in three weight classes and lineal titles in two weight classes.
Currently, Canelo is the undisputed super middleweight champion as he holds the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF super middleweight titles completing the feat in 2021.
Canelo is also well known for his ability to counter-punch and exploit the flaws of his opponents' defense. He has tremendous power and targets the body and the head well. Canelo holds wins over Gennadiy Golovkin (x2), Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Sergey Kovalev, Caleb Plant, Callum Smith, and Billy Joe Saunders is regarded as a first-ballot hall-of-famer. In 2021, Canelo Alvarez was viewed as the best fighter in the sport of boxing. Despite a loss to Dmitry Bivol, in 2022, which saw unsuccessful to try to gain the WBA light heavyweight title, Canelo is considered the best super middleweight currently.
Canelo will return on September 30th against Jermell Charlo as Canelo seemingly has signed a three-fight contract with Premier Boxing Champions, and this will be the first of his three fights under his new contract - as it appears he will no longer fight on DAZN.
Canelo is considered one of the greatest fighters in the modern era, though flawed at times due to his slow feet, Canelo has established himself as an all-time great of the modern era.
