During the past few weeks, Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz has been doing plenty of interviews while calling for a fight between his young star and interim WBC super-middleweight champion David Benavidez and the undisputed champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. A copy of the email was posted, or as people like to call it these days, “receipts” showing Sampson making an effort to start negations with Team Canelo. Although that is the fight that everyone wants to see and one Benavidez wants badly, it was disclosed earlier this year that Benavidez has a signed contract to fight regular WBA super middleweight champion David Morrell at some point soon. While Morrell called out Benavidez in his last fight, it didn’t seem like it would happen next until recently.
A reporter from Boxeo De Columbia recently interviewed Sampson, and he said, “I would not surprise me if that fight (Benavidez vs. Morrell) will sell more than what Canelo is going to sell. When asked why, Sampson said, “Canelo is going to fight but not against the best.” Sampson was then asked about more or less when we could expect Benavidez vs. Morrell, and he said, “October.” Sampson later said Sebastian Fundora vs. Brian Mendoza II would be the co-main. That would be one helluva a co-main and main event, which sounds like it would land as a Showtime PPV card.

Benavidez wants to continue to prove that he is the boogeyman of the division. Morrell sees himself as the future and wants to take on the toughest challenges now and not later. These two fighters are highly respected, and a fight between these two young gunns is the type of matchup that would produce fireworks. Although it may not necessarily sell more than Canelo’s fight, it will do good enough business, and more importantly, it’ll be a fan-friendly fight.
