David Morrell (9-0, 8KOs) has launched a scathing attack on David Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) following reports that the “Mexican Monster” denied reports that he had accepted an opportunity to face morell later this year.
Sampson Lewkowicz on June 9th ( who handles Benavidez) had suggested that a bout between Benavidez and Morrell would take place in October after confirming that Canelo Alvarez had turned down the opportunity to face the WBC interim title holder at 168lbs.
Morrell has responded angrily with insults towards David, Jose Benavidez and the brother’s father. Morrell also suggests that Benavidez is hypocritical by calling Canelo Alvarez a duck, yet Morrell feels that Benavidez is ducking him.
“David Benavidez is a big bitch,” said Morrell. “His dad is a big fraud, always talking like he’s some tough guy, but he’s just a small man with a little man complex. His brother wants to be a gangster who talks a lot of shit but got knocked out by Crawford and did a horrible job in the movie Creed.
“The Benavidez’ are a bunch of cowards. This is the guy you call The Mexican Monster? He’s a fraud. This is the guy everyone is building up. I see a fat insecure boy… that’s what I see. Benavidez couldn’t walk down any street in Cuba without getting his shoes taken. Funny he calls Canelo a duck; who’s the duck now?
Morrell holds the WBA’s secondary super-middleweight title and has been one of the sport’s rapidly rising stars with several knockout performances. Morrell would claim the WBA’s regular title in 2021 and has made four successful title defences, with each victory coming by way of knockout.
Canelo Alvarez currently holds all the world governing body belts at 168lbs and targets other opportunities outside the division. With Canelo’s refusal to seemingly fight either Morrell or Benavidez, a contest between the two combatants themselves has gained momentum in regard to speculation and, quite frankly, what the super-middleweight division needs to solidify a genuine contender for Canelo Alvarez.
