Former undisputed cruiserweight and WBA heavyweight champion David Haye has given Tyson Fury his sympathy following news that Fury’s undisputed heavyweight encounter with Oleksandr Usyk was postponed after Fury sustained a cut in training.
Fury’s fight with Usyk was quickly rescheduled for May 18, following confirmation by Queensberry Promotions and Turki Alalashikh.
Fury’s cut happened during a sparring session. The Briton suggested an elbow landed on his right eye and that caused the cut, even though he was wearing headgear during the session.
However, Fury is no stranger to being involved in cut sagas and fights being postponed
Haye and Fury were due to face each other on September 21, 2013. However, Haye was forced to withdraw the week before the agreed date after sustaining a cut in sparring following a session with Filip Hrgovic.
Fury, who was even less refined in his opinions 11 years ago, branded former world champion Haye a “shithouse” and, throughout his career, insisted he was cut from a different cloth in comparison to the former two-weight world champion Haye.
Following the confirmation of Fury’s injury, Haye said he felt “bittersweet” about Fury pulling out of a fight everyone wanted to see.
“Fury suffers a cut a couple of weeks before the fight,” Haye said in an Instagram post. “I know that pain all too well. I remember in 2013, when I was scheduled to fight Tyson Fury, I myself suffered a cut the week before the fight, and oh, did I not hear the end of it from him.
“To this day, I still hear, ‘You only got cut because you didn’t want to fight him. You’re scared’. I was the big favorite, just as he’s the big favorite in this fight, and sometimes shit happens, and that’s part of the sport.
“I actually remember thinking at the time [2013], ‘I hope one day before one of his big fights he has to suffer this; he’s been that much of a dick about it,’ and here we are.
“But I don’t feel that good about it at all.
“I get no pleasure from him having to pull out of a fight that I wanted him and the rest of the world wanted to see take place.”
