We thought we’d see Gennadiy Golovkin against Erislandy Lara next, but we were wrong.
As first reported by Jake Donovan of BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the WBA and IBF have reached a joint resolution stating Golovkin will next defend against the IBF number-one contender Esquiva Falcao.
Golovkin coming off the heels of a loss to Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight will return to his ideal weight class of 160 lbs for this bout, to defend his titles.
The reason given for why Falcao will fight Golovkin over Lara, apparently a loophole was exploited that allowed the IBF defense to happen.
Falcao, a 2012 Olympic Silver medalist, has been fighting on Top Rank undercard for quite a while and will get a marque bout, as his last fight was a technical decision win over Patrice Volney.
No information on when or where the fight will be held.
