We are just days away from the huge WBC junior welterweight title fight that will stream live on DAZN PPV. Former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) faces the WBC champion Regis Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs) live from the Chase Center in San Francisco, CA. Will the puncher or the boxer come out on top this weekend?

There is no doubt that Haney is one of the most talented fighters in the sport today. He has everything you need in a top-level fighter: speed, footwork, defense, and lightning reflexes. The issue is that we haven’t seen him exercise those skills against many elite-level fighters. George Kambosos Jr. is not an elite fighter, and everyone else he fought with a name was past their prime. Haney now has the opportunity to face a world champion just outside his prime but young enough to give any other world champions some real issues.

How does Haney beat Prograis? This isn’t going to be what you want to read, but the fight could play out like both of the Kambosos Jr. fights with Haney throwing a left jab, followed by an overhand right and then holding for the majority of the time when Prograis rushes in. This isn’t ideal if you are looking for entertainment, but this is Haney’s style, especially if he knows he’s up against a puncher. It’ll be up to Prograis to try to stop it, but it’ll be challenging as Haney has mastered this fighting style.
CAN REGIS PROGRAIS BEAT THE YOUNGER, MORE ATHLETIC FIGHTER IN HANEY?
Prograis came up the ranks through the ShoBox cards, and it wasn’t until he made it onto the WBSS (World Boxing Super Series) that fight fans at an international level could witness his talents as a fighter. Although he lost a razor-sharp decision to Josh Taylor in 2019, Prograis still won that night as fight fans now knew who he was and wanted to see more of him. That’s when things got muddy for Prograis, as he couldn’t get any big fights. He then joined Probellum in what was supposed to be his moment until it wasn’t. Prograis then moved on from Dibella Entertainment, making himself a free agent until he signed a co-promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing. Prograis asked for a big fight, and Eddie Hearn delivered by getting the deal done with Haney.

Now Prograis, at 34, has to hope he has enough legs to hang with the 25-year-old Haney. What does that look like on fight night? Prograis will have to make it an ugly fight and focus on Haney’s body for most of the first six rounds. If Prograis can slow Haney down, then that’s when he has to come with the straight left hand down the middle. Prograis has the power to hurt and even knock out Haney, but he has to lay the groundwork for that during the first half of the fight.

Although fans want to believe this will be an all-time classic, it doesn’t look like that’s the fight we will get. Haney will throw his one-two combination and hold all the way to a unanimous decision, making him the new WBC junior welterweight champion.
