Tom Loeffler: Keeping watch of Canelo Alvarez Vs Jermell Charlo with Serhii Bohachuk waiting in the wings at 154 pounds

The all undisputed battle between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo commences in six short weeks time. Canelo puts his four super middleweight belts on the line against the light middleweight ruler at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas in a bout that has two of the division’s world titles held up until the pair face off in Nevada.

One of the many fighters who occupies a place high in the rankings is Serhii Bohachuk for one of the eight world titles currently pending.

ProBox TV caught up with Bohachuk’s promoter Tom Loeffler to get his view on the upcoming super fight’s impact on his charge, who waits in the wings for Charlo’s green and gold belt.

“He is right there own the cusp of a world title shot.” Loeffler said. “He has the WBC Continental Americas championship, he’s made three defenses. That was a very impressive performance against Patrick Allotey. He fought Jaime Munguia challenging for a world title. He went the distance with Kanat Islam who’s a world class fighter, so having a 1st round stoppage by Bohachuk was very impressive.

“I think he is really in his prime right now, he had that setback where he went to get his visa, and Russia invaded the country as we all know. He was literally stuck there for over six months trying to get legally out of the country. He had to go to America to get his visa, then he had to go back to Poland and wait a month for the US Embassy to open, then he was finally able to come back here. So I see him more motivated than ever, fighting for his career and his people. Most importantly his country. His brother is over there fighting in the military, he is fighting in the boxing ring for his country.”

The Ukrainian knockout artist (23-1, 23 KOs) sits at number 2 in the WBC world rankings at 154 pounds. The outcome in the upcoming clash between Canelo and Charlo will dictate who Bohachuk could fight next.

“He’s clogged up the division for a long time, he’s got all the titles.” Loeffler continued. “It looks like there is going to be a rematch between [Sebastian] Fundora and [Brian] Mendoza coming up. Then Serhii is right there in the perfect position to challenge for a world title next year. So we wait and see what happens with Charlo. Once you move up two divisions I don’t know how effective it is going to be for him to come back down to 154. We will see, only time will tell. Naturally if he wins the fight with Canelo, then I’m sure he would stay in the bigger division. That would vacate the titles, so that would kinda open things up depending on how the results go with the Canelo fight.”
