Undefeated super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli retired Australia’s Rohan Murdock on his stool in the chief support to Artur Beterbiev Vs Callum Smith this evening in Quebec.
Mbilli started on the front foot looking to land big early. Murdock caught a good uppercut against thrones after the first minute. The Cameroon born Mbilli was hit with a big shot that caused the referee to briefly pause action due to a perceived shot to the back of the head. Mbilli was in full control of the opening three minutes.
He took charge again in the second landing his jab at will against a quiet Murdock. Mbilli was dominant throughout. On three separate occasions Murdock found himself pinned to the ropes under constant attack. He was lucky to survive the round as Mbilli ended the round with big right hands that had his opponent slightly wobbly on his feet.
The third round was more of the same, the knockout felt close already. Murdock was again on the ropes as Mbilli landed head and body shots, Murdock did well to stay on his feet and fight back. The two men traded, which saw Murdock take another three potentially crippling shots. Mbilli again finished strong with his Australian adversary on the ropes.
Round four continued with the same script. Mbilli again let rip with Murdock on the ropes, on the second occasion Murdock’s mouth guard fell from his mouth which saw another aggressive attack briefly halted to the displeasure of the Quebec crowd.
Each round was taking a similar format with Mbilli having his way with Murdock up against the ropes for much of the bout. Round five saw Mbilli take it up a gear, adding the uppercut to the onslaught of the Australian, Murdock was showing some chin.
Action slowed in the sixth with Murdock having his most success so far in the fight, but he was still far from looking at all competitive. The round once again ended with Murdock taking a barrage of punishment against the ropes. Mbilli was throwing the kitchen sink at him, it was remarkable how he was still standing.
Murdock would not return for the seventh round to give Mbilli a well deserved sixth round stoppage victory.
Mbilli’s record improves to 26-0 (22 KOs), his knockout victory on the bounce. Murdock picks up a second career stoppage loss, his record moves to 27-3 (19 KOs).
