Michael Hunter is considered one of the best heavyweights to never hold a world title. One of the most respected fighters in the gyms of Las Vegas, Nevada, who has sparred the who's who in the sport of boxing, fought Alexander Povetkin to a draw, stopped Martin Bakole, and lost a hard-fought decision Oleksandr Usyk in a cruiserweight title fight. Recently, Hunter was brought into Team Combat League, a boxing promotion that is functioning as a team sport-type event. Hunter was viewed as a free agent acquisition to the Las Vegas Hustle, a team run by coach Dewey Cooper.
Hunter, who has sparred with Tyson Fury, and fought Oleksandr Usyk as a professional provided unique insight into the ongoing conflict between the two fighters. The fans want to see an undisputed title fight between the two world champions and Hunter has strong beliefs as to why we may never see this fight.
"I think Tyson Fury, would come up short [against Usyk], and I think he knows that," said Michael Hunter exclusively to ProBoxTV News. "All fighters have probably with fighters who are just a little bit shorter than them and move just a bit better than them."
Hunter believes that the most significant attribute of Fury in his movement would be offset by the angles, rhythm, and timing of Oleksandr Usyk, who might be a smidge faster and a tad bit more awkward as well. Citing Fury's tough fights against Otto Wallin and Steve Cunningham as examples of times Fury has struggled against smaller heavyweights who had good movement.
As for if Hunter believes he will ever get to fight Oleksandr Usyk again - the fighter is pessimistic. Though he has hopes of it, the realist in him seems to have set in.
"Yeah I hope that we do [rematch with Usyk]," said Hunter. "But I don't think we will see me back in the ring with [Usyk], just because of how the terrain [of the heavyweight landscape] is going. I do think Usyk is one of the best in the division, there is nobody else that can compete with him other than myself."
