The managerial handlers of the unbeaten and minor WBA super-middleweight title holder, David Morrell, have denied reporting circulating that Morrell has refused an offer to face current WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
Manager Luis DeCubas Sr, the executive of Warriors Boxing who handles Morrell (9-0, 8KOs), has insisted that those reports are untrue and that he and Morrell are, in fact, open to facing a number of fighters, which include Bivol (21-0, 11KOs).
“They say that we rejected an offer to fight Bivol and that is not true,” said DeCubas Sr. to George Ebro. “We have always said that we are ready to fight anyone, be it Bivol, be it David Benavídez, whoever it may be. Morrell is the first to agree [to any fight].”
Morrell is preparing to return to action on December 16th against Sena Agbeko at The Armory in Minneapolis, headlining Showtime Boxing’s final live broadcast and production ahead of the network’s withdrawal from boxing in 2024.
DeCubas Sr continues to add when speaking to Ebro that the talented Cuban Morrell will be seeking to keep busy and active and confirming that He and Morrell are interested in facing the winner of the upcoming clash between David Benavidez (27-0, 23KOs)and Demetrius Andrade (32-0, 19KOs) later this month.
“For Morrell it is, however, a possibility to look to the future,” commented Luis DeCubas Jr. to George Ebro. “First, it’s about keeping him active while waiting for better possibilities to come along. Second, he will gain experience and third, we will closely follow what happens between David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade [on November 25th]. We still insist that we want to fight Benavidez.
“We are waiting for an opponent who comes with everything, who is going to show a lot of hunger with the intention of taking the belt from David. But we have complete confidence in David and know that he will succeed in a place where he is 100% adored and supported like Minneapolis (where Morrell made his professional debut).”
