WBC super flyweight world champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez has taken the boxing world by storm, defeating Carlos Cuadras and Sriskat Sor Runvisai, in consecutive bouts after moving up from 112 lbs. for the chance at a world title after his November 2021 world title shot fell through.
Rodriguez has been touted by Robert Garcia, one of the best boxing trainers in the world, as ‘just needing an opportunity.’ Once Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing bestowed him that, “Bam” Rodriguez has been one of the can’t-miss fighters of this era.
Now Rodriguez’s idol, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez has taken notice, as Gonzalez is starting his training camp for his December 3rd, trilogy bout against Juan Francisco Estrada, in the Coachella Valley.
The fight is more of a fantasy fight than a fight that can happen, as “Chocolatito” and Rodriguez share a friendship and mentor-like relationship along with mutual co-promoters in Teiken Promotions and Matchroom Boxing.
“If that fight was to ever happen, it would be a great fight,” said Gonzalez during an interview with FightHype.com, in the dignified and subtle way of elegance that Gonzalez speaks. “He’s a good champion on his way up. It would be a great fight.”
Rodriguez, who fights this week against a former “Chocolatito” Gonzalez opponent in Israel Gonzalez, will serve as the co-main event to Saturday’s marquee attraction between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin, September 17th, live on DAZN PPV, taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
