Boxxer’s Ben Shalom will be an interested observer when Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron step through the ropes this weekend at the 3Arena in Dublin, targeting the winner of the contest for one of the more prominent members of his promotional stable in the form of Natasha Jonas.
Jonas (14-2-1, 9KOs) is no stranger to either of this weekend’s combatants, having fought Taylor (22-1, 6KOs) over several occasions as an amateur on the international stage and once as a professional in 2021, losing via a narrow unanimous decision verdict.
Jonas and Cameron (18-0, 8KOs) were former international teammates on the GB amateur podium squad, training together before progressing into the pro ranks and assisting each other as sparring partners for each other during the early stages of their careers.
Jonas firstly has to negate past Mikaela Mayer on January 20th at the M&S Bank Arena in her hometown of Liverpool, defending her IBF welterweight title in the process against the former unified lightweight world champion Mayer.
Shalom believes that Jonas is now a better fighter than the version that fought Taylor to a close fight in 2021 and believes that all parties are interested in a fight between Jonas and Cameron.
“I actually believe that Tasha Jonas is a better fighter now than the one that lost very narrowly to Katie Taylor. She’s developed even further and I think she’d be more than ready for that challenge if it came again,” promoter Shalom said to Sky Sports.
“Chantelle Cameron, I know that’s a fight that both fighters will probably want, so I’m looking forward to seeing the result this Saturday, then an equally big night on January 20th, and who knows what sort of night that could set up.”
Shalom continues to add that Jonas is now only interested in taking fights which will extend her legacy now that she has now become a two-weight world champion, with Mayer acting as the first step in advancing the Liverpudlian’s legacy.
“The past couple of years have been a whirlwind, from not having won a world title to winning multiple world titles to becoming a two-weight world champion. All that’s left for her now is the big names, the legacy fights. That’s what we believe Mikaela Mayer is. We think this is two huge icons in the sport.
“If she comes through that, we’re looking at the winner of Cameron-Taylor. We think that’s the obvious fight to make.
