WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) had some things on his mind this evening as he posted a message on X that he is retiring from the sport of boxing. Stevenson posted, “I’m officially retiring from the sport of boxing. I’ll be in the gym forever perfecting my craft and helping the next generation become great and chase they dreams, but I ain’t fw this weak boxing game.”

Stevenson has been under much scrutiny after his win over Edwin De Los Santos in November. Although he dominated on the cards, Stevenson and De Los Santos were not busy and broke the record for the fewest punches thrown in a fight. Stevenson cited that he did not feel well, which was the reason for his poor performance.
This news also comes just one hour after the WBO ordered the negotiations for their vacant title between Emmanuel Navarrete and Denys Berinchyk. There were rumors that a fight between Stevenson and Navarrete was up next, but with the WBO ordering the Berinchyk fight, the option to face Stevenson next seems to be off the table.
Stevenson would be added to the list of fighters who have recently retired, as Teofimo Lopez did right after his June fight against Josh Taylor. That retirement would be short-lived, and he would request to be elevated to super champion. In the coming days, we will see if Stevenson is serious about his retirement or will return to continue his career.
