Promoter Tom Loeffler was in Dublin this past weekend to drink in the return of big time boxing in Ireland. Katie Taylor fell at the hand of Chantelle Cameron in a battle of the undisputed champions.
This past Saturday didn’t quite go the way of the Irish, Garry Cully, Dennis Hogan and Taylor all lost to the away fighter. However, the event was a huge success that was more than warmly welcomed by the city of Dublin, the Irish capital.
The nation has an abundance of talent, many have had to build their profiles and records away from home soil due to the ejection of, at the time, management and promotional powerhouse MTK Global from the Republic of Ireland. Loeffler’s charge, Callum Walsh (6-0, 5 KOs) has begun his career in America but Loeffler has plans to bring him home.
“We are excited about working with Callum Walsh.” Loeffler said in an exclusive interview for ProBox TV. “You see so many talented fighters coming out of Ireland. Callum has a huge future where I think he can carry the flag for his country. He’s a six time national Irish champion, European medalist and he’s making a huge splash in the States. He’s been training with Freddie Roach. We have been building him on the west coast, then we took him to Boston. Now he is fighting on June 9th, we want to keep him very active.”
Walsh takes on veteran Carson Jones in just under two weeks at the Commerce Casino, Commerce, California.
“Next year we are looking to bring him back to Ireland, if everything goes to plan.” Loeffler continued. “He is from Cork. So the plan is for him to fight two more times [in America]. He will fight in Madison Square Garden, at The Theatre in November. Then, like I said, the plan is to bring him back to Cork and have his homecoming. Ireland is a beautiful country, the first time I have been here. It would be great to get Callum back to Ireland.”
Walsh headlines his seventh professional fight live on UFC Fight Pass on the west coast. He turned professional under two years ago, campaigning at 154 pounds and comes off a knockout victory over Wesley Tucker this past March.
