WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs) was in the ring celebrating his brother Nikita Tszyu’s (8-0, 7 KOs) fifth-round TKO over Dylan Biggs (10-1, 7 KOs) to capture the Australian junior middleweight title when he was asked about his future plans. Tszyu told the reporter, “You know who I’m chasing. Let’s get Nikita to chase one of those guys (junior middleweights) as well. We’ll bring all of Australia to (Las) Vegas March 2; you know what’s up.” Then, when the reporter asked Tim about potential names for his brother as a next opponent, Tim said, “I don’t know, who’s there? Give him Tony Harrison ha ha ha. Why not?”
Las Vegas, NV, has been on the mind of Tim Tszyu since his last win, which was a unanimous decision over Brian Mendoza (22-3, 16 KOs) in October. Initially, Tszyu was targeting January as the month he returns to action, but with Showtime Boxing closing its doors at the end of the year, Tszyu’s team was likely given a tentative date of March 2 as Premier Boxing Champions looks to secure a partner to distribute their events.
The fight that Tszyu has been chasing after is against unified junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs), who was stripped of the WBO title moments before the Canelo Alvarez fight and recently vacated his IBF title. The fight with Charlo was initially scheduled for January this year, but an injury forced the unified champion to reschedule. Once healed, Charlo decided to take the more lucrative fight against Canelo Alvarez, forcing Tszyu to take on other contenders.
Nothing stands in the way of a Tszyu-Charlo fight now other than Charlo moving up to middleweight and vacating the rest of his titles. That’s not something that has been speculated, so for now, fans will have to wait to see who Tszyu faces on the latest March 2 date that he mentioned at his brother’s fight last night in Australia.
