Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has said he will make an “important announcement” about his career on Tuesday.
The Mexican icon will be on TV Azteca to let the world know what will happen next, but the internet has already started to speculate.
Here are five of the possibilities?
Terence Crawford
‘Bud’ wants the fights and it is quite possibly the most lucrative contest that can be made in boxing, even if it matches the welterweight king against the best of the super-middleweights.
Crawford only wants superfights now, and he has mentioned the Canelo fight more than once. On the other hand, however, it has only ever seemingly received a luke-warm reaction from the Mexican.
Network
There is rampant speculation about Canelo and his future with PBC, online. Is Canelo set to go in a different direction? Or is he going to spearhead a new deal with a more traditional broadcaster – which Stephen Espinoza has said is in the works for PBC – or will Canelo be part of the Amazon Prime revolution?
Jaime Munguia
It seemed John Ryder was going to be the gauge; see how Munguia did against him last month and if he impressed, they could potentially make the Canelo fight. Well, Munguia did impress, stopping a man in a one-sided fight who Canelo toiled over 12 rounds against.
Reports from Boxing Scene indicate that talks with Munguia have opened, but that they might not be advanced enough for a fight announcement on Tuesday.
Jermall Charlo
After a resounding win over Jermell Charlo last year, twin Jermall was widely understood to be in the running next for Canelo. But the appetite for that is simply not there. Charlo has had one fight in three years, a drab 10-round points win over Jose Benavidez last November.
Charlo has been beset with out of the ring issues, but fans would rather see Crawford as a wild card, the impressive David Morrell, Munguia or David Benavidez in the opposite corner.
Retirement
Former 154lbs champion Ishe Smith wrote on X he felt the announcement was retirement or Crawford.
With it said to be an announcement about his career, could it mean that it is not merely a fight announcement? Could this be the end of Canelo’s career? The 33-year-old has had 64 fights, has nothing to prove and is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. There could be worse times to retire than on top, as the undisputed 168lbs champion.
That said, there will always be an element of why did Canelo not fight David Benavidez for hardcore fans, because he is a logical rival to fight now, and in many ways the only one.
