“Marvelous” Mykquan Williams will be cheering for Jamaine Ortiz to win the WBO junior welterweight world title on February 8.
The New Englander will have his own battle first, against undefeated Luis Feliciano on January 17th at the ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida.
Williams, who in preparation for his ProBox TV debut sparred with Jamaine Ortiz, shared his thoughts on the upcoming fight and although he wouldn’t give specific details about how good he thought Ortiz was, he did make clear his intentions of rooting for Ortiz.
“We actually were working with Jamaine this camp,” said Williams. “He was at my gym a couple of weeks ago. He is still located around me, out of Massachusetts.”
“I want Jamaine to do it, especially for New England. I think he has the ability to do it. He has great movement, great punch selection. He is real smart in there.”
Williams is looking to mirror Ortiz’s career which started in 2020. Ortiz had to take a number of hard fights to get his spot in the division. Whether it was a stoppage win over a tough Sulaiman Segawa, a draw with Joseph Adorno, or beating Nahir ‘Woo’ Albright, Ortiz battled his way to the spot of facing former world champion Jamel Herring, whom he beat.
That opened the door for big fights with Vasiliy Lomachenko, and now Teofimo Lopez.
“I am just rooting for him,” said Williams. “Me and everybody around me are just rooting for him.”
